WhatsApp for Android is reportedly working on an exciting new feature that will allow users to create personalized AI characters, adding a fun and interactive element to the messaging app.

According to a feature tracker, this new capability will let users design their own AI chatbots, similar to the AI character creation feature already available on Instagram and Messenger.
Spotted in the beta version of WhatsApp (2.25.1.26), the feature will enable users to define the chatbot’s personality traits and focus areas through text prompts. The AI will then generate a profile picture and bio based on these descriptions. Additionally, the app is expected to include a dedicated tab to showcase all AI characters created by users, as well as public AI bots.
This feature, still under development, is part of WhatsApp’s growing integration with Meta’s AI tools. Screenshots from the feature tracker suggest that users can type up to 1,000 characters to describe their bot, with suggestions to help guide the creation process. While only the initial step was visible, the full process is expected to include options for customizing the bot’s image, bio, and privacy settings.
Though it’s unclear whether these AI characters will appear across all Meta platforms, the new feature is expected to add an intriguing layer to WhatsApp’s functionality, giving users a chance to create their own digital companions or helpers within the app.
