Microsoft is taking a monumental step to solidify its position as a leader in the AI space by planning to invest around $80 billion (approximately ₹6,86,200 crore) in fiscal 2025.

This substantial investment will focus on developing state-of-the-art data centres designed to train artificial intelligence models and support the deployment of AI-driven and cloud-based applications.
The surge in AI investment comes in the wake of OpenAI’s groundbreaking launch of ChatGPT in 2022, which has ignited widespread interest in integrating AI across various industries. As AI continues to demand immense computing power, companies are turning to specialized data centres capable of linking thousands of chips in clusters to handle these advanced workloads.
Microsoft, already a key player in AI through its partnership with OpenAI, has been steadily enhancing its infrastructure. This $80 billion investment will not only expand its AI and cloud capabilities but also broaden its global data-centre footprint. Analysts expect Microsoft’s total capital expenditure for fiscal 2025, including leases, to reach around $84.24 billion (approximately ₹7,20,475 crore), reflecting the growing demand for AI-driven services.
Of the $80 billion, more than half will be allocated to data centres in the United States, highlighting the country’s leadership in the global AI race. Microsoft Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith, emphasized that private capital and innovations from U.S. companies, both large and small, are crucial to maintaining this competitive edge.
This investment marks another bold move for Microsoft as it continues to drive innovation in the AI landscape, securing its place at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field.
